Co-Ops Can Contribute RM50 Billion To GDP By 2020, Says Angkasa

SHAH ALAM -- Angkatan Koperasi Kebangsaan Malaysia Bhd (Angkasa) is confident the country's cooperatives could contribute RM50 billion to gross domestic product by 2020 from around RM35 billion currently.
Chairman Datuk Abdul Fattah Abdullah said to reach the target, Angkasa has formulated a restructuring plan based on the needs of seven sector leads outlined in the National Cooperative Policy.
"From 2015 onwards, the cooperatives will be more active in financial services, wholesale and retail, tourism, healthcare, agriculture and agro-based industry, plantations, telecommunications as well as property development," he told Bernama after the tabling of Angkasa's Key Performance Index (KPI) report here Thursday.
Abdul Fattah expressed hope the government would provide an annual grant of RM10 million for business development research in potential new areas such as the automotive and renewable energy sectors.
