Service Apartments: Johor Directs Review Of Guideline And Standard

JOHOR BAHARU -- Johor has directed the Town and Country Planning Department to review the planning guideline and standard for the construction of service apartments in the state.
Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said this was because many of the apartments, which should have been rented out, were being sold to the public.
"Buyers face the problem of high property tax because the service apartments are built in commercial zones and don't have facilities like surau, mosque and schools in the future," he said, adding that the study would be completed in four months.
He said, unlike normal housing projects, service apartments were not imposed conditions to have such facilities.
He was speaking at a media conference after opening a ground-breaking ceremony for the Taman Sierra Perdana Affordable Homes project in Masai here, Saturday.
He said that in the Iskandar Malaysia area alone, 86,000 units of service apartments had been approved for construction by the state government prior to this.
The number, according to Mohamed Khaled, had exceeded the initial suggestion of the Iskandar Regional Development Authority for the construction of 26,000 units by 2025.
Meanwhile, Taman Sierra Perdana developer, Shiya Sdn Bhd would build 296 terraced townhouses, in the project, measuring 92 square metres each.
The project, with three-room two-bathroom housing units costing RM150,000 each, would be fully completed by 2016.
